I really love how you have a deaf character in this comic! I myself am learning ASL (My second year) and i know some deaf people as well as am learning about deaf culture, and i think this is just so great!

Oh dude, that's so cool!

I gotta ask, after two years of lessons, how good with the language do you feel? Is it slow going at that point or do you feel like you're getting a handle on how to say what you wanna say?

Ya, my school actually added it as a language the year I started here!

I feel very confident in my fluidity, but now the only thing I think I need to work on is speed. I have done I lot with grammar and I think I can do well with that, but people who are deaf sign a lot faster than me, and being able to sign faster would help me read signs faster as well.

The first year year we focused on vocab a lot, and fingerspelling as well, and this year we are learning more conversational pieces rather than writing grammar and learning vocab. what is good about ASL is that if you don't know a word you can finger spell it instead. We are currently in a unit about storytelling, starting with Timber (if you don't know what that is it is a deaf story that is very commonly told and everyone knows it, kinda like goldilocks etc. in a sense) and we are learning how to tell stories about things we did in front of the class, such as me talking about winter break after we came back.

I really love love the language though, i really enjoy learning it better than auditory languages.

Question! For handsign in Runewriters, is it based on a particular type of sign language like ASL or another (I'm blanking on the one which is apparently used more/more reliable than ASL)?

I'm not sure what language you're thinking of in the parenthetical (in the US, the debate between ASL and Signed English is the one I'm more familiar with, and ASL is definitely the more preferred of the two among Deaf folks I've heard from!), but yeah, it is! :'D I use ASL to represent handsign in the comic. That's technically a translation convention -- like how these characters probably wouldn't actually be speaking English -- but I do try to make the signing as accurate as I can to a real language! ;u;
